Understanding the Problem

What Actually Causes Dark Circles?

Dark circles are rarely a single problem. Most patients have a combination of structural, biologic, and pigment-related causes — which is why accurate physician assessment before treatment is essential.

Volume Loss & Hollowing

As we age, fat pads beneath the eyes deflate and shift downward. This creates a shadowed hollow — the tear trough — that reads as a dark circle regardless of pigmentation.

Mid-Face Descent

The cheek fat pad descends with age, pulling support away from the lower eyelid and deepening the nasojugal groove. Restoring mid-face volume lifts the entire under-eye area.

Thin Skin & Vascularity

The periorbital skin is the thinnest on the face. Underlying blood vessels show through, creating a bluish or purplish hue — especially in lighter skin tones.

Pigmentation (Periorbital Melanosis)

True pigment-based dark circles are most common in deeper skin tones and are driven by melanin deposits, sun exposure, and genetic predisposition.

Skin Thinning & Texture

Loss of collagen and elastin in the delicate periorbital skin makes the area appear crepey, translucent, and more prone to fine lines — all of which worsen the dark circle appearance.

Lymphatic Congestion & Puffiness

Poor lymphatic drainage causes fluid pooling beneath the eyes, creating puffiness that casts shadows and accentuates the dark circle appearance.

Our Approach

Treatments for Dark Circles & Eye Area

Biologic · Growth Factors

PRP — Platelet-Rich Plasma

Concentrated growth factors from your own blood.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is produced by drawing a small amount of your blood and centrifuging it to concentrate the platelets — which are rich in growth factors that stimulate collagen production, tissue repair, and new blood vessel formation.

When injected into the periorbital area, PRP improves skin quality, reduces crepiness, and gradually diminishes the bluish discoloration caused by visible vascularity beneath thin under-eye skin. It is entirely autologous — derived from your own blood — with no risk of allergic reaction.

PRP is an excellent entry-level biologic option for patients with mild hollowing, thin skin, or early discoloration who prefer a natural approach before committing to filler.

Key Benefits

  • Stimulates collagen and elastin in the delicate periorbital skin
  • Reduces bluish discoloration from visible vascularity
  • Improves skin thickness and texture over 4–8 weeks
  • Autologous — no synthetic material, no allergy risk
  • Pairs well with microneedling for enhanced delivery (PRP + SkinPen)
  • Minimal downtime — mild bruising or swelling for 2–4 days

Ideal For

Mild hollowing, thin/crepey skin, bluish discoloration, patients preferring a biologic approach, younger patients with early changes

Sessions & Maintenance

2–3 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart; annual maintenance

Our Protocol

The Combination Approach

Most patients benefit from a layered protocol. Our physician assesses your anatomy, skin type, and Fitzpatrick classification before recommending the right combination.

01

Physician Assessment

Tear trough depth, mid-face volume, skin quality, pigmentation type, and Fitzpatrick skin type are all documented before any treatment is recommended.

02

Structural Foundation

If mid-face descent is present, cheek filler is placed first — lifting the structural foundation and often reducing tear trough depth before direct under-eye treatment.

03

Volume Correction

Tear trough filler via cannula for immediate hollowing correction. Placed conservatively — less is more in this area. Reversible with hyaluronidase.

04

Biologic Layer

PRF or PRP injected or applied with SkinPen/RF Microneedling to stimulate collagen, improve skin thickness, and reduce vascular discoloration over 4–8 weeks.

05

Pigment (If Needed)

If pigment is a significant component, Pico Laser or DuoVive non-ablative protocol is added after skin quality has improved — with topical brightening agents as maintenance.
