PDO Thread Lift in Dallas: The Physician's Guide to Barb Threads, Mono Threads, and Who Benefits Most
PDO threads are one of the most misunderstood treatments in aesthetics. Some patients expect surgical results. Others dismiss them entirely. The truth is more nuanced — and for the right patient, the results are significant.

What PDO Threads Actually Are
Polydioxanone (PDO) threads are absorbable sutures placed in the subdermal tissue using fine needles or cannulas. They produce two distinct effects: immediate mechanical repositioning of descended tissue (barb threads) and diffuse collagen stimulation throughout the treated area (mono threads).
Barb Threads: Mechanical Lift
Barb threads have directional projections that anchor into the subdermal tissue. When tensioned, these barbs physically reposition descended soft tissue, producing a visible lift within the same appointment. The PDO material absorbs over 6 months, but the collagen scaffold it stimulates persists for 12-18 months.
Mono Threads: Collagen Stimulation
Mono threads are smooth, without barbs. Placed in a grid or fan pattern, they stimulate fibroblast activity and collagen production throughout the treated area. They do not produce mechanical lift, but they significantly improve skin quality, texture, and overall skin density over 3-6 months.
PDO Threads vs HIFU
They are complementary, not competitive. HIFU works at the deep SMAS layer and produces results over 3-6 months through collagen remodeling. PDO Threads work in the subdermal plane and produce immediate mechanical lift. For patients with significant laxity, combining both treatments produces results that neither achieves alone — which is why they are paired in the Lakewood Lift Protocol.
